Magazine analysis on Academy Magazine

The magazine is called Academy Magazine as it is for academy or grammar schools around the world and talks about different issues that these schools may face. The significant words on this front cover is academy magazine so it if anyone who may be looking to attended or find out more information on academy schools they can simply buy this magazine and it will tell them about the different academy school. John Catt Educational is the company that publishes this magazine about academy schools. John Catt Educational publishes a range of books and magazines such as Prep School which I done my first analysis on, conference common room magazine and books like gap year guide books. You can get the magazine as a hard copy or you can get it online so you would be able to send it to different teachers or pupils in your school. The magazine is free to a Full member and to Associate schools. If you’re not a full member or an associate school the cost of the magazine is five pounds. The magazine has a website that you can go on and order to get the magazine delivered or emailed to you and you can get more information about the other magazines that John Catt Educational offer. The magazine is targeting students who maybe want to attended or current students in academy school around the globe, parents and teachers so this magazine is advertised for a wide range of audience. The photograph shows two students who seem to be in a science lab doing experiments. Both students look to be enjoying their time in school and enjoying doing this experiment. The students are both wearing white shirts with a green tie and a blue tie which could be a school uniform but it is hard to tell as it is a mid-shot so you can’t see the both half of their bodies and you can’t see a logo of a school on any of their clothing but they could be representing there school if you knew of their uniform. The cover line at the bottom of the page is “Learning for life” which makes you think of what you will need to know for the future like applying for jobs or applying for different course in different universities. There is another cover line at the very bottom of the cover page which states “What’s going on in academy and free schools” which incises you in to reading more because it has got you attention on the front page and you want to read more. Above the masthead it tells you what issue the magazine it is and this particular magazine is volume 3, number 2 spring 2014 which is good so you can see if you have already read this magazine or if you have purchased this issue. Particular items in the magazine are featured because they are new and up to date topics that have been talked about in the past year or so and they want to tell you a little more information about that topic such as using tablets to transform learning in this particular issue. These particular typeface is being used as it make the cover look more sophisticated and makes the cover look more attractive to the reader or passer-by. The magazine mostly uses the colours that aren’t too bright but not dull either such as blue and a light shade of green and white and some orange. They use a black outline around some of the words so the words are clearer to see and to read. The magazine is formal and well presented to the audience they are looking to attract. The magazine cover is not polluted by lots of writing or different images it has one image in the centre of the cover which is of two boys in a science lab. The cover is good because it’s not covered in writhing that would take away from the picture of the boys. The magazine doesn’t look cheap but it looks like there could have been more done the cover as there isn’t much done on the actual cover. This magazine cover is one of the better magazine covers I have seen when I researched them to find a good magazine cover to analyse. The magazine has features in it such as what’s going on in academy’s and free schools. You can’t see any other features that are going to be in the magazine because that is the only one that you can see from the front cover. Men are only being represented as there is only a photograph of two boys in shirts and ties on the front cover. There is a limited range of people that are being represented as there is only boys on the cover and they are both white which could lead to people feeling discriminated because there is no other races on the cover and no women. I think the reasons that this magazine is popular is because people want to become aware of academy schools around the globe and other free schools. People may want to keep up to date with the latest updates of resources. This magazine offers an inside view on academy schools around the world and what is happening in these schools to see if they can do what them schools are doing in their own school or family. 

Analysing prep school magazine

The magazine is called Prep school because it is a magazine about Prep Schools which is a privet school for children aged from seven to thirteen. The significant words on the cover are Prep School so if anyone is looking for a magazine about schools they will be able to tell that this magazine is about Prep Schools. The connotation they  have is of a group of pupils who attend a prep school. You can see that the pupils in the photograph look happy to be at their school and be on the iPads.John Catt Educational in cooperation with Satips is the company that publishes the prep school magazine. Satips only publishes about prep schools but they make new issues of the magazine every January, April and September. John Catt has numerous books and magazines such as is magazine, academy magazine and Conference Common Room magazine. You can get the magazine as a hard copy or you can get it online so you would be able to send it to different teachers or pupils in your school. There is a cover line at the bottom of the page with is related to the image and tells you about the image and what the article is going to be about when you get inside. There is also a slogan under the mast head which states “reflecting the best in prep and junior school world”.Above the masthead it tells you what issue of the magazine it is and this particular one is summer term, 2012 issue 74 which is there so you can see if you have already read it or purchased this issue. Particular items in the magazine are featured because they are new and up to date topics that have been talked about in the past year or so and they want to tell you a little more information about that topic such as using tablets to transform learning in this particular issue. These particular typefaces are used because it looks more professional and it is clearer to read if you are looking at it from a far. The magazine mostly uses the colours that are easy to read such as white on black or dark colours and they have use blue for the masthead background so it makes the white writing stand out more on the blue.I notice that the magazine presentation is very formal and the magazine is very well presented to the audience that they are looking to attract. The magazine cover is good as there is not too much information on the cover so it doesn’t look cramped with writhing or other images on it.The magazine doesn’t look cheap it is basic but it looks like there has been a lot of work put in it and a lot of money spent in making this whole magazine.A lot of school magazines have all of the same information on them and the same kind of images on them but this magazine for prep school is different to them as it isn’t bombarded with different in cover lines and different images it is just plain and simple with one image of six happy students and with only one cover line which is at the bottom and doesn’t take away from the image which take up most of the cover.The magazine has features in it such as why using tablets in schools are transforming learning. You can’t see any other articles in the magazine as it only shows one cover line that states “A focus on IT The ‘flipped classroom model using tablets to transform learning”.The main types of products being advertised are tablets.Men and women are represented by three young girls and three young boys that look happy to be in school and using the tablets. By using both boys and girls it makes it show you that it is not just for boys or girls. There aren’t any different races on the cover of the magazine so people with different races may feel like they are being discriminated on by not having different races on the cover.I think the reasons that this magazine is popular is that it is for prep schools all around the world and has different type of articles that can be useful in everyday schools all around the world. the magazine offers and incite to what prep schools do and what the journalist feels that schools should be more aware of.Academy Magazine contents page analysis

School magazine questionnaire analysis

The First question I included in my questionnaire was asking what gender they are. I did this as St. Catherine’s Collage is a mixed school and I would like my magazine appalled to everyone in the school males and females. As you can see my pie chart shows that more females did this questionnaire as my school has more females than males in it.


The next question I asked was to see what age the people doing the questionnaire would be so I can then see what year group the students may be in. I did this to see help with the question “what would you like to be included in the magazine?” this shows that students who are aged 11 to students who are aged 19 would like different things in the magazine that could relate to them.                                             

I choose this as my next question as it shows if the students who did this questionnaire would be interested in buying a school magazine. As you can see the most of the students who done the questionnaire said yes they would be interested in a school magazine this is good as I can see if this would be useful in our school.

The next question I chose was asking how often you would like a school magazine to be published. As you can see from the bar chart the majored said they would like it published weekly. This shows that the school magazine would be very good as it would inform the students what is going on in the school.

The next question I decided to use was asking them how much they were willing to pay for the school magazine. As you can see from the pie chart the majority of them said they would pay £1 for the magazine. Which is good as you will be getting back from selling it and you could even put advertisements in it and then you would make a bigger profit of selling them.


The next question I asked was to rate the three possible names in which they like the best and which they didn’t like at all. As you can see from the bar chart the most popular name for the magazine was Cor Unum which relates to the school motto Cor Unum, One Heart. I chose to use this question as they would have the choice of what they can call the school magazine.

The next question I choose to use was who you would like the magazine for. I chose this question to see if they would like a year group magazine, a key stage magazine or a whole school magazine. As you can see from this pie chart the majority of the pupils that did this questionnaire said they would like a whole school magazine.  


The next question I asked was what you would like to be included in the magazine. As you can see from the bar chart the most popular is exam tips, competitions information on school trips and upcoming events. This is good as I can see what they would like to see in the magazine and what they would be interested in reading.

Finally the last question I chose was what you would like to have a chance of winning in the magazine. As you can see from this bar chart the most popular was food vouchers then iTunes voucher and closely after that clothes vouchers. This is good as it shows what they would like to have a chance of winning if they do quiz or enter competitions that are in the magazine.
